well my friend nearly a year down the track and I had Exactly the same problem as you. I too swapped simcards with a vodafone usb modem to trouble shoot a poor signal. I too restored my phone to the latest firmware and started a fresh install but still no sms.
Now I find this post, I don’t know how I missed it last week. Anyway I’m glad to say that after changing the mcn to 3mobile and not vodafone I can now send sms again> Thank you very much.
now for the 4.1 jb

GOD BLESS YOU!!!
I’ve been trying for two days to fix this on my Itouch 2g with no luck, thank to you now I fixed it!
Actually, what worked for me was to switch in the router settings from N-only to B-only.
In these two days I had tried everything, but nothing worked.
